A Hand Plan for Reading

Choose a comfortable place for your spare hand and use a page turn or bookmark as a natural check-in. You do not need to interrupt every sentence to watch your hands.

Set up the book and spare hand

  1. Support the book or device so your hands do not need a strained grip.
  2. Put a bookmark within reach before you start.
  3. Choose a relaxed place for the spare hand during the page.
  4. At a natural page boundary, notice the setup and adjust it if needed.

Keep the story readable

If checking your hands makes it difficult to follow the text, reduce the checking. A chapter boundary or the end of a reading session may fit better.

For a device, the spare-hand plan may be different from a paper book. Choose the setup for the surface you actually use.

Remember one useful detail

At the end, note whether the book support or hand position helped you stay comfortable. Keep that detail for the next session. You do not need a record of every page or every urge.
